여성이 남성과 잠자리를 같이 하고 싶은 마음이 들게 하는(make a woman to sleep with a man) 것은 무엇일까.
남성이 여성에게 어필하게 하는 특징들(the features that make a man appeal to a woman)은 상상보다 훨씬 더 흥미롭고 복잡(be far more fascinating and complex than you could imagine) 하다. 영국 일간지 데일리메일은 23일(현지시각) 심리학자인 신디 메스턴 박사와 데이비드 버스 박사가 저술한 신간 ‘왜 여성들은 성관계를 갖는가’의 발췌본(the extract from the new book ‘Why Women Have Sex’ by psychologists Dr. Cindy Meston and Dr. David Buss)을 간추려 소개했다.
◇ 냄새
새로운 과학적 연구에 따르면(according to new scientific researches) 여성은 어떤 남성이 자신에게 맞는지를 결정하기에 앞서(before a woman decides if a man is right for her) 남성의 유전자 구성을 냄새로 알아낸다(sniff out a man’s genetic make-up)고 한다.
여성의 후각(a woman’s sense of smell)은 임신을 할 수 있는(can become pregnant) 월경 주기의 중간(during the monthly menstrual cycle) 배란 시기를 전후해 절정에 달하는(reach a peak around the time of her ovulation) 것으로 알려져 있다.
질병을 유발하는 박테리아나 바이러스와 싸우는 유전자들(the genes responsible for fighting off disease-causing bacteria and viruses)은 주조직적합복합체(MHC)로 불리는 유전자군(群)에 들어(be found in a group of genes called the major histocompatibility complex, or MHC) 있다.
사람들마다(different people) 이 유전자들의 다양한 변형을 갖고(have various versions of these genes) 있다. 그런데 여성들은 자신들의 그 것과 다른 MHC 유전자들을 가진 남성들과 짝을 맺음으로써 두 가지 면에서 이로움을 취한다(can benefit in two ways from mating with men whose MHC genes are dissimilar to their own).
그런 짝(such a mate)은 대개 여성 본인과 다른 유전자들을 가진 경우가 많다(be likely to have dissimilar genes in general). 이들 다른 MHC 유전자의 남성과 짝을 지으면, 첫째로 가까운 관계 유전자들의 생식에 따른 선천적 결함들 중 많은 것을 방지하는 데 도움을 줄 수(might help to prevent many of the birth defects associated with reproducing with close genetic relatives) 있다.
두 번째로 이로운 점(the second benefit)은 그러한 결합으로 태어난 아이들은 누구나(any children of such a union) 더욱 강한 면역체계를 갖게 된다는(have a more robust immune system) 것이다. 흥미로운 것은 여성들은 냄새로 다른 MHC 유전자를 가진 남성들을 알아낼 수 있다는(be able to sniff out men with dissimilar MHC) 사실이다.
브라질 학자들은 29명의 남성에게 면으로 된 피부 천조각을 5일 동안 걸치도록 해서(ask 29 men to wear cotton skin patches for five days) 땀을, 그래서 체향을 흡수하도록(absorb their sweat and thus their body odors)했다.
그리고 29명의 표본 여성들(a sample of 29 women)로 하여금 각각의 천조각 냄새를 맡아(smell each cotton patch) 매력적인 것부터 매력적이지 않은 것까지 냄새를 평가하도록(evaluate the odor on a scale from attractive to unattractive) 했다.
과학자들은 이와 함께 혈액 검사를 통해(through blood tests) 각각의 남성과 여성의 특정 MHC 유전자 복합체를 파악(identify the specific MHC complex of each man and woman)했다. 그 결과 여성들은 자신들의 그 것과 다른 가장 바람직한 복합체를 가진(have a complex dissimilar to their own to be the most desirable) 남성들의 체향을 집어냈다.
반면, 자신의 그 것과 비슷한 복합체를 가진 남성의 냄새에는 역겨워하며 움찔했다(recoil in disgust). 고도로 발달된 이 후각(this highly developed sense of smell)이 여성들의 성적 관심에 깊은 영향을 미치는(have a profound effect on women’s sexuality) 것이다.
진화심리학자(evolutionary psychologist)인 크리스틴 가버 애프가 박사는 48쌍의 MHC 유사성을 연구해본(study MHC similarity in 48 couples) 결과, 각각의 여성과 남성의 유사성 정도(the degree of similarity between each woman and man)가 증가할수록 여성의 남성 상대에 대한 성적인 반응(the woman’s sexual responsiveness)은 줄어드는 것으로 나타났다.
또 남성 파트너가 비슷한 유전자를 가졌을 경우 여성은 덜 자주 성관계 갖기를 원하는(want to have sex less often) 것으로 조사됐다. 자신과 비슷한 MHC 남성 파트너를 가진 여성들(women with MHC-similar partners)은 다른 남성들에 대해 더 많은 성적인 환상을 갖는다(have more frequent sexual fantasies about other men).
특히 배란 주기 중 가장 왕성할 때(particularly at the most fertile phase of their ovulation cycle) 그런 욕구를 더 느낀다고 한다. 그리고 다른 남성들에 대한 성적인 환상은 단순히 머릿속에 머물지 않고(do not just remain in their heads) 더 높은 비율의 성적 불륜(higher rates of sexual infidelity)으로 이어지는 것으로 조사되고 있다.
◇ 키(신장)
여성은 어떤 몸을 바람직하게 생각할까(what sort of body does a woman find desirable). 여성이 남성에게 기대하는 가장 분명한 신체적 특징(the most obvious physical characteristic a woman looks for in a man)은 키(height)다.
여성들은 키 큰 남자들을 매력적으로 생각(consider tall men to be attractive)한다. 각종 연구 결과에 따르면, 여성들은 키 큰 남자들을 남편감으로 선호하며(prefer tall men as husbands), 특히 단기적인 섹스 파트너로는 키에 훨씬 큰 비중을 두는(put an even greater emphasis on height in shorter-term sex partners) 것으로 나타나고 있다.
실제로 평균 보다 키가 큰 남자들(taller-than-average men)은 더 많은 동거 여자친구들과 자녀들을 갖고 있는(have a greater number of live-in girlfriends and more children) 것으로 조사돼 연애나 생식에 있어 그들의 인기를 입증해(confirm their popularity for romance and reproduction) 주고 있다.
키 큰 남성들에 대한 여성들의 선호에는(in women’s preference for tall men) 근원적인 논리가 있는 것으로 보인다(there seems to be an underlying logic). 한 예로 서양문화권에서는(in Western cultures) 키 큰 남성들이 작은 남성들보다 더 높은 사회적-경제적 지위를 갖는(have higher socio-economic status than short men) 경우가 많다.
영국의 경우, 신장이 1인치 더 클 때마다(each added inch of height) 남성의 연봉이 수천 파운드씩 더 높아지는(add several thousand pounds to a man’s annual salary) 것으로 조사되고 있다. 평균적으로(on average) 키가 1m83인 남성은 1m65인 남성보다 30년간의 직장생활 동안 10만 파운드(약 2억원) 이상을 더 버는(earn more than 100,000 pounds across a 30-year career) 것으로 나타났다.
또 키 큰 남성들은 작은 남성들보다 더 건강한 경우가 많다. 예를 들어 경찰관인 경우, 키 큰 경찰관들은 작은 키의 동료들보다 공격을 덜 받는다(get assaulted less than their shorter colleagues). 이는 신장이 다른 남성들로부터도 더 많은 존중(more respect from other men)을 받는다는 것을 의미한다. 그러니 이성인 여성들은 어느 쪽을 더 원하겠느냐(which one could a woman, the opposite sex, want?)고 책의 저자들은 반문한다.
◇ 체격
키(신장)가 여성들을 자극하는 유일한 남성의 신체 부위(the only aspect of men’s bodies that excites women)는 아니다. 상대 짝 선호도에 대한 연구에 따르면(according to studies of mate preferences) 여성들은 성적인 관계뿐 아니라 장기적 파트너십에 있어서도 힘이 세고, 근육질이며 강건한 남성을 원하는(desire strong, muscular, athletic men for long-term partnerships as well as for sexual liaisons) 것으로 나타나고 있다.
대부분 여성들은 엉덩이에 비해 어깨가 넓은 V자형 몸통에 본능적인 선호도(a distinctive preference for a V-shaped torso, broad shoulders relative to hips)를 갖는다. 여성들은 또 근육질 상체와 조화를 이룬 날씬한 배에 끌린다고9be attracted to a lean stomach combined with a muscular upper torso) 한다.
그래서인지 엉덩이 대비 어깨가 넓은 남성들(men with a high shoulder-to-hip ratio)은 16세 또는 그 이전의 어린 나이에(at an early age - 16 or younger) 성관계를 갖기 시작하는(begin having sexual intercourse) 것으로 집계되고 있다. 따라서 어깨가 좁은 동료들에 비해 더 많은 섹스 파트너를 갖게(have more sex partners than their slim-shouldered peers) 돼 (한 여성과) 관계를 갖고 있는 도중에도 더 많은 바람을 피우는(have more affairs while in a relationship) 경향이 있다.
그러나 남성들은 여성들이 매력적으로 보는 근육질의 정도를 너무 과대 평가해(overestimate the degree of muscularity that women find attractive) 바벨을 들어올리고, 단련된 식스 팩 근육을 과시해야만 하는(need to pump iron and sport a honed six-pack) 것으로 생각한다.
(운동 과다에 따른) 경직된 근육의 남성 이미지(images of muscle-bound men)가 여성들이 가장 성적으로 매력적이라고 여기는(find most sexually attractive) 것에 대한 잘못된 인식을 부추기고 있다. 마치 불가능할 정도로 여윈 모델들의 사진특집(photo spreads of impossibly thin models)이 여성들로 하여금 남성들이 가장 매력적으로 생각하는 가냘픔의 정도를 과대 평가하게 만드는(lead women to overestimate the degree of thinness that men find most attractive) 것과 같다.
◇ 얼굴
전통적으로 잘 생겼다는 남성과 그 보다 덜 매력적인 평범한 남성 중에 한 사람을 선택해야 하는 경우가 되면(when it comes to choosing between a conventionally handsome man and an ordinary, less attractive man) 여성들은 선택 결정에 어려움을 겪는다(have a difficult choice to make).
여성들은 네모진 턱의 남성적인 얼굴을 평상적인 성적 만남에선 가장 섹시하고 가장 매력적이라고 생각(find square-jawed, masculine faces to be the sexiest and the most attractive for a casual sexual encounter)한다. 테스토스테론(남성 호르몬)에 의한 남성적인 얼굴에 대한 여성들의 성적 욕구(women’s sexual desires for testosterone-fuelled faces of masculinity)는 여성들의 주기 중 배란 시기 때 특히 강해진다(be especially strong during the fertile window of their cycle).
하지만 여성들은 장기적 관계를 위해서는 어느 정도 덜 남성적인 얼굴이 더 매력적이라고 판단(judge somewhat less masculine faces to be more attractive for a long-term relationship)한다. 여성들은 장기적인 짝을 선택할 때는(when choosing long-term mates) ‘좋은 아빠’가 될 것 같은 남성들에게 끌린다(be attracted to men who are likely to be ‘good dads’)는 것이다.
그러나 임신할(become impregnated) 때가 되면 더욱 남성적인 얼굴(more masculine faces)이 주는 강건한 건강 신호(the signals of robust health)에 자신도 모르게 끌리게 된다. 남성적 얼굴을 만드는 높은 테스토스테론 생성이 신체의 면역기능을 보장해주기(compromise the body’s immune functioning) 때문에 우성을 향한 여성의 본능이 그 쪽으로 기운다는 얘기다. 또 남성적으로 보이는 얼굴(a masculine-looking face)은 남성의 건강(a man’s health), 다른 남성들과 경쟁해 성공할 수 있는 능력(his ability to succeed in competing with other men), 보호해줄 수 있는 능력(his ability to protect)을 표시해주기 때문이다.
그렇다면 한 가지 수수께끼가 생기게(raise a puzzle) 된다. 여성들은 왜 위험한 관계에서 평생의 사랑에 이르기까지(from dangerous liaisons through to life-long love) 모든 짝짓기 관계에서 매우 남성적인 남성들에게만 끌리지(be attracted to highly masculine males for all mating relationship) 않는 것일까.
더 많은 테스토스테론을 가진 더 남성적인 남성들(the more masculine men with more testosterone)일수록 성적인 충실도가 적은 경향이 있기(tend to be less sexually faithful) 때문이다. 따라서 대부분 여성들은 '상충성'에 직면하게(face a ‘trade-off’) 된다.
즉, 덜 남성적인 남성을 선택(choose the less masculine-looking man)하면 보다 좋은 아버지와 성적으로 충실한 짝을 얻게(get a better father and sexually loyal mate) 된다. 반면에 더욱 남성적인 남성을 선택하면 자식에게 건강에 좋은 유전자들을 부여해줄(endow her children with good genes for health) 수 있지만, 성적인 에너지의 일부를 다른 여성들에게 돌리는(channel some of his sexual energy toward other women) 남성에 대한 대가를 감수해야(must suffer the costs) 한다.
◇ 목소리
목소리의 고저(voice pitch)는 사람의 연설에 있어 가장 인상적인 특징(the most striking feature of human speech)이다. 그 중에서도 여성을 성적으로 도취하게 하는 남성의 목소리(male voice that gives women a sexual buzz)가 있다.
사춘기 이전에는(before puberty) 남자와 여자 목소리가 비슷하다. 그러나 사춘기가 되면 현저한 변화가 일어난다(remarkable changes occur). 테스토스테론이 사춘기 소년들에게 변화를 유발(trigger the change in boys at puberty)한다.
남자애들은 성대(聲帶) 길이의 급속한 증가를 겪으면서(experience a dramatic increase in the length of their vocal cords) 여자애들의 그 것보다 60퍼센트가 더 길어지게(become 60 per cent longer than those of girls) 된다. 더 긴 성대와 성도(聲道)는 더 굵고 공명이 더 큰 목소리가 나게(produce a deeper, more resonant voice) 한다.
최근 연구 결과에 따르면, 여성들이 단기적 관계 또는 장기적 관계의 상대를 선택할 때 남성의 목소리는 결정적 역할을 한다고 한다. 굵은 목소리는 여성들의 단기적 또는 장기적 파트너 선택 둘 다에 있어 선호 대상이지만, 오로지 섹스를 위한 단기적 만남 개연성만 놓고 고려할(consider them as prospects for purely sexual, short-term encounters) 경우엔 굵은 목소리 선호도가 훨씬 높았다. 특히 배란 사이클의 왕성한 단계 때(in the fertile phase of their ovulation cycle)는 굵은 목소리 남성들에게 가장 강한 성적 매력을 느끼는(show the strongest sexual attraction to men with deep voices) 것으로 조사됐다.
굵은 목소리는 일반적으로 양호한 건강과 좋은 유전자의 사인으로 받아들여진다(be accepted as a sign of good health and good genes). 그런데 굵은 목소리는 신체의 좌우대칭(the bilateral body symmetry)이 잘 돼 있어야 나오기 때문에 여성들은 자신에게 생길 수 있는 자손을 위해 그 건강한 유전자의 소리(the sound of healthy genes for her possible offspring) 를 좇아간다는 것이다.
◇ 춤과 행동
사람이 춤추는 방식(the way a person dances)은 엄청난 양의 정보를 드러나게(reveal a huge amount of information) 한다. 훌륭한 춤 솜씨(a dancing prowess)는 에너지 수준, 건강 및 생물역학적 효율성 등의 정보를 전달해준다(convey information about energy level, health and biomechanical efficiency).
한 연구에서는 여성들에게 디지틀 처리로 가면을 씌우거나 화소 처리된 춤추는 남성들의 이미지를 보게(have women view digitally masked or pixellated images of men dancing) 했더니 여성들이 더 크고 더 강렬한 동작들을 보이는 남성에게 끌리는(be attracted to men who display larger and more sweeping movements) 현상을 보였다. 그들을 더 에로틱하게 평가한다는(rate them more erotic) 얘기다.
어떤 여성들은 오로지 춤에 반해서 그 남성들과 성관계를 가지는(have sex with men simply because they are impressed by their dancing) 경우도 있다고 한다. 여성들은 춤 동작들 중에서도 특정 신체의 동작을 다른 것보다 훨씬 매력적인 것으로 느낀다는(find certain body movement to be more attractive than others) 조사 결과도 있다.
남성들 움직임의 다른 행태도 여성들에게 유용한 짝짓기 정보를 제공해(provide women with valuable mating information) 준다. 동성(同性)간의 쌍방이 아닌 일방적 타치(nonreciprocal same-sex touching) - 한 예로 한 남성이 다른 남성의 등에 손을 대는(a man touches another man’s back) 것 -는 우세를 나타내는 잘 입증된 신호(a well-documented signal of dominance)이다.
여성들은 ‘손 대는 사람들’이 더 많은 지위를 가진 것으로 여기며(see ‘touchers’ as having more status), 팔이나 다리를 쭉 펼 때처럼(as when a man stretches his arms or extends his legs) 공간을 최대화하는 동작들(movements that maximize space)을 또 다른 우세 신호(another dominance signal)로 받아들인다고 한다. 또 신체가 열린 자세를 보이는 사람들(those who display open body positioning) - 예를 들어 가슴에 팔짱을 끼지 않은(do not fold their arms across the chest) -을 더 힘이 있는 쪽으로 판단(be judged to be more potent)한다.
◇ 개성과 유머
성적 매력(sexual attraction)은 단순히 호환 상대를 찾아 자석처럼 이끌린 육체들의 문제(simply a matter of physical bodies drawn magnetically together in search of compatibility) 만이 아니다.
어떤 여성들에게 있어 개성 - 특히 뛰어난 유머감각(in particular, a good sense of humor) -은 성적인 스파크를 일으키는 데 있어(in generating a sexual spark) 대단히 중요한 역할을 한다. 인터넷 데이트 사이트들 중에 약자로 GSOH(good sense of humor)가 있다는 것만 봐도 유머가 얼마나 중요한 지 알 수 있다.
여성들은 남성의 유머 감각을 단기적-장기적 관계에 있어 모두 탐나는 특성으로 평가(rate men’s sense of humor as a desirable trait)한다. 위트가 있는 남편을 가진(have witty husbands) 여성들은 그렇지 않은 여성들보다 더 결혼생활에 만족해(be more satisfied with their marriages than women who do not) 한다고 한다.
유머감각이 왜 성적 매력에서 중요한 지는(be important in sexual attraction) 과학적 논란의 대상(the subject of scientific debate)이 돼왔다. 유머감각에 관한 남녀 간의 차이는 유머의 생산(남을 웃기는 것)과 유머 감상(남의 농담에 웃어주는 것) 사이에 있다(be between humor production(making others laugh) and humor appreciation(laughing at others’ jokes).
남녀 간에 차이가 있다. 남성들은 자신들의 농담에 잘 웃어주는 여성을 유머를 가진 여성으로 규정(define a woman with a good sense of humor as someone who laughs at their jokes)한다. 남성들은 자신들의 유머를 잘 받아주는 여성들(be receptive to their humor)을 좋아한다.
이와는 대조적으로(in contrast) 여성들은 유머를 구사하는 남성들(men who produce humor)에게 이끌린다. 원 나이트 스탠드부터 평생의 짝짓기까지 모든 유형의 관계에서(for all types of relationships, from one-night stands to lifelong matings) 여성들은 남성들의 유머에 빠져든다.
어쨌든 여성이나 남성 모두 유머감각을 가진 상대를 좋아하는 것은 웃음이 긍정적 분위기를 이끌어내고(elicit a positive mood), 이는 신뢰와 지성의 표시(a sign of confidence and intelligence)로 받아들여지기 때문이다.
